Asayake Taiko at UCSD May 6th

The Japanese drumming group, Asayake Taiko at UCSD, invites you to become a sponsor for our 11th annual Spring Concert “The Spirit of Asayake” based on the Ghibli animation, “Spirited Away”. This event will be held May 6th, 2018 in Price Center West Ballroom at UC San Diego from 5:30-8:30 pm. This event will be our opportunity to showcase not only our new drums and equipment, but our eight new talented members.

Founded in 2002 as a sister organization of Nikkei Student Union, Asayake Taiko was created out of the founding students’ desire to reconnect with their Japanese heritage, as was the cause of many previous taiko organizations in the prior decades, such as Kinnara Taiko of Little Tokyo and San Jose Taiko of San Jose’s Japantown. In doing so, Taiko in North America has grown into something that is also Japanese-American in culture, being distinct from the form in Japan.

Now, our organization not only serves as a way for Japanese Americans to reconnect with their Japanese roots, but also acts as an outlet for others to learn and appreciate this Japanese artform for our members, as well as a way to share this aspect of Japanese and Japanese American culture to wider audiences through performances, demonstrations, or workshops, on or off the UCSD campus.

As an art form and an organization that finds roots within Japanese and Japanese American heritage, we sincerely hope that you will help support us by attending or sponsoring this event.

Parking for the event is located at the Gilman Parking Structure on the UCSD campus, 3100 Gilman Dr. La Jolla, CA 92093.
