Date: Monday, January 30, 2012
Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Venue: San Diego State University, Fowler Athletic Center Room 1014

The San Diego Japanese American Citizens League (SD-JACL), Assemblymember Marty Block, San Diego Nikkei Student Union (SD-NSU), Asian Pacific Student Alliance (APSA), UCSD Nikkei Student Union (UCSD NSU), and Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) are proud to present the 2nd Annual Fred Korematsu Day. On this day we will be commemorating the achievements of Fred Korematsu in his fight against the injustices of the Japanese internment camps during World War II.

In 1944, Fred Korematsu challenged the U.S. Supreme Court (Korematsu v. The United States) in regards to the constitutionality of Executive Order 9066, which ordered Japanese-Americans into internment camps during the second World War. Following Korematsu’s example, the theme of this year’s Fred Korematsu Day is “Courage;” the courage to speak out, the courage to do what’s right, and the courage to stand up for one’s rights.

Using Fred Korematsu’s case as one instance, Korematsu Day will look at our civil liberties and how they are reflected in the Constitution. During this event, we will be examining Korematsu’s example of courage, along with others whom have exemplified courage, through a diverse group of panelists who will discuss civil liberties, the Constitution, and the “courage” to stand up for justice and one’s rights. This is an important discussion that every U.S. resident needs to hear now, especially in the post-9/11 atmosphere. Please join us for this enlightening and free event. We hope to see you all there!
